Valant is very arrogant. Unfortunately for everyone else, he tends to be correct about his own capabilities.

Valant's will is inconquerable. Perhaps because he is so self-assured, but none of the forces he learns about and masters manages to corrupt him for their own gain. The fel does not bring him to destruction and chaos that he does not want, the void does not bring him to ruin he does not wish. Sure, it might align occasionally, but ultimately Valant is the master of his own destiny, and he relishes in humbling anything that tries to change that.

This is the biggest factor for anyone tolerating Valant's presence. He is a very strong force that will not kneel to evil, so you can be assured that he will work against it.

Story

Born into a family of high class mages, his intellect made him a prodigy. He would often pursue greater and more difficult studies to challenge himself and overcome.
Battle For Azeroth - Upon learning of a few scholars beginning to research using the Void as a power to be used, Valant took his opportunity to get resources to master another realm of magic. So, he would join Magister Umbric's group; and would be banished from Silvermoon as a result.

Winstant - These two butt heads more than anyone else on the Alliance's side of the guild. Perhaps because of his achievements, preference for brute force, irritable nature, or all of the above; but Valant seems to always be trying to show up Winstant, or antagonize him. It tends to end with a punched face.
Talaen - Frustrated that such a clearly powerful, dominant force is such an idiot. Valant knows how much of a feat it is to beat the demon inside, yet it drives him crazy that Talaen is a joker and dancer.
Nearly everyone dislikes him for various reasons, mostly his poor treatment and condescension towards them.

He tends to get very, very involved in his work. This tends to lead to him neglecting his physical health and hygiene, though through magic, some of that can be alleviated (what I'm saying is that he stinks).

Named after Valant Gramarye from Ace Attorney. There's not much inspiration beyond the name, I just liked how it sounded.
